Narrative Writing Process

Writing allows students to express themselves creatively and to make their thinking visible to others. For that student who is always finished their writing first and promises that they have checked it from top to bottom and are completely happy with it, a checklist is a wonderful way to encourage self editing and self assessment.

The Writing Process can be applied across a variety of genres including narrative writing and persuasive writing. When teaching narrative writing this year, I used the Seven Steps to Writing Success as mini lessons with my students. I tend to set a task after my mini lesson to see what the students absorb and understand. This allows me to assess if a student or group of students need more teaching and allows other students to get started and follow the processes to show their understanding.

Then comes the next writing step where I ask students to edit their first draft and for some of my students, a checklist is a useful scaffolding tool. This Narrative Writing Checklist might be used at any of the drafting stages or perhaps when a student feels like they have completed their writing and “it is definitely not missing anything”. It can then be used to encourage and reinforce proofreading, editing and redrafting skills. This checklist could be printed, checked off and submitted with a piece of writing as it encourages students to self assess also.
